  1. Hi Feliciana,

Very nice blog you've got going here. It is very fascinating to see Indonesian intellectuals blog in English. I have to respectfully differ with your opinion of the video and President Obama. I watched it and it is indeed pretty and all, however, it's easy to get all caught up by the visualizations, charts, animations, etc... Living here in the United States, one really has front row seats on all the action. It honestly scares me to think about the future of this country and the direction it's heading under President Obama.

I truly believe that President Obama is wonderful person and well meaning; but as an American that loves his country, the president's ideology and economic policy(or lack thereof) scares me.

The reality is this country is in a dire state. Economically it's been at it's weakest since the great depression while the national unemployment rate reaches historical highs. The Obama administration to this day still has not released a jobs plan or a budget! Government is spending and borrowing like never before putting the national debt at $16 trillion USD! Who's going to be paying that back you ask? Well that is exactly the question myself and millions of other College students are asking each other. Ultimately myself, and if God blesses me with kids one day in the future, they'll be passed on with the responsibility of footing the bill. That is not fair at all!

There is a fundamental problem with this country. When I watched the video I sort of colloquially "vomited in my mouth". It is no doubt that the production quality of the video is masterclass. If it was an ad for an apple product or even es cendol from your local warung I'd definitely be sold, but not with the future of this country at stake. Pardon these vulgar words but there's no better way to summarize the video than to say: no matter how much you "polish a turd" it is still a turd in the end.

There is no question that Obama has a wonderful and charming persona and also very likable, however, he's made for an awful president these past four years. After reading all of this I beg you not to label me as a hater or bitter. Please don't get me wrong, I actually respect Obama and am proud that we both share roots in Indonesia(although I spent a much longer time there and as a result my Bahasa Indonesia is actually light-years better than his ;D). I'm also proud of the fact that we as a country elected our first black president. I hope one day Indonesia will see this as an example to follow. Perhaps one day the next president of Indonesia will be a native Papuanese or a Tionghoa Christian from Manado! I just hope and pray that our two countries with its own respective problems will choose the right leaders to lead us down the path towards prosperity and make our world a better place.

    Your new reader,

    Gavin

  2. Hi Gavin,

Welcome to Gimmickmore! Thank you so much for reading my blog,
and i really do appreciate your comment; it gives me new insights of Obama's administration from his citizens itself. Thank you :)
I have to be honest, i do not really pay close attention to his administration that allow me to judge,
but i admire his way of telling his story and communicating to the public, and i must admit that he is one inspiring and charismatic person.

Well, let us look at the bright side, my country leaders are not much better than yours anyway, at least, your president got the campaign team right with all the glitzy infographics, animated videos, and fancy taglines than a bad photoshopped billboard along the highway, right? :D

    Cheers!
    F.
